Lorato Bogopa is a Botswana-born social entrepreneur and Brand builder of the Hotep brand as well as Heritage Legacy. Purpose-driven enterprises that reimagines African craft through thoughtful design, cultural integrity, Indigenous Knowledge and sustainable production. These brands where built from her desire to challenge the perception of craft as merely souvenir-making for safari markets and instead elevate it to a respected art form rooted in functionality, heritage, and skilled technique. The brand specializes in handcrafted bags that combine woven mokolwane palm with premium local tanned leather, creating timeless pieces that reflect Botswana’s cultural identity while appealing to global markets.
She collaborates with a community of women artisans in the Ngamiland region of Botswana. Her work empowers these artisans through sustainable craftsmanship, providing economic opportunities while preserving traditional weaving techniques. By building bridges between rural craftswomen and international markets, she fosters inclusive economic growth and celebrates the beauty of locally sourced natural materials and cultural storytelling.
Lorato’s commitment to community development and social transformation has been shaped by her extensive engagement with women’s groups in Ngamiland. She is passionate about creating pathways for inclusive growth and believes strongly in collaboration, lifelong learning, and the power of innovation to address real-world challenges. Her work aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
Her entrepreneurial journey has gained international recognition in United Kingdom, Switzerland and Germany. Lorato participated in the Forbes 30 Under 30 community and was selected as the face of the Absa Group Africanicity rebranding campaign, marking the transition from Barclays Africa to Absa. She has also exhibited her work internationally in New York City, creating platforms to express African cultural identity through art, design, and creativity. In addition to her entrepreneurial work, she actively mentors’ students from Gaborone Technical College and frequently speaks at business forums on social entrepreneurship and women’s empowerment.
Alongside her work as a creative social entrepreneur, Lorato is a Human Capital Specialist with expertise in organisational development and behavioural psychology. She holds a Master of Science in Industrial and Organisational Behavioural Psychology from Aston University in the United Kingdom and possesses a British Psychological Society-accredited certification in Occupational Test Use (Ability and Personality). These psychometric tools support organisations in improving employee placement, strengthening engagement, and enhancing overall organisational effectiveness.
Professionally, Lorato has worked with a range of organisations on strategic consulting initiatives including organisational restructuring, change management, and human capital strategy. Her work focuses on improving workplace culture, increasing employee job satisfaction, and aligning people strategies with broader organisational goals to drive sustainable performance and growth.
