Matthews was appointed as the Acting CEO of Minergy Coal in September 2023 by the Minerals Development Mining Company (MDCB). He is a seasoned minerals engineer with over 30 years of extensive experience in technical development, operations management, and strategic leadership within the mining industry.  Before joining Minergy, Matthews was the Chief Technical Officer of the MDCB.

Matthews is a member of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SMME), the Southern African Coal Processing Society (SACPS), the Botswana Coal Forum, and an Associate of the Camborne School of Mines, ACSM.
