Paul G. Ramokgalo
Founder & Managing Director
Risk Engineers Botswana

Paul G. Ramokgalo (PGR) is a trailblazing risk professional whose visionary leadership and dynamic expertise have reshaped and continues to shape the landscape of risk management in the country. With an illustrious career of over 30 years, PGR has walked the risk management value chain end to end, weaving together intricate threads of risk assessment, mitigation, risk financing strategies (alternative risk transfer), and insurance claims management. PGR’s longest working period (14 years) was at Debswana where he established the Group’s Risk Management function in 2000 - instituting proactive risk identification / mitigation strategies and fostering a culture of risk-awareness that permeates all facets of Debswana’s mining operations.
Additionally, PGR charted unexplored territory by establishing Debswana’s inhouse insurance company / captive -Sesiro Insurance Co (Botswana’s first captive and 4th largest insurer in Botswana) to optimize risk financing strategies. Post Debswana, PGR was headhunted and appointed to turn-around AON Risk Management Pty Ltd - ARM (a risk management and engineering consultancy firm - then part of the USA based AON Global Group). The highlight of his success was leading a global team of peers based in Australia, France, Japan and the UK to win a risk engineering tender for the USD8Billion Ambatovy Mine-a major, long-term nickel & cobalt mining operation in Madagascar (https://ambatovy.com). ARM was subsequently declared as AON’s Sub-Saharan Africa’s Centre of Excellence in Risk Engineering Consultancy. PGR left AON, after four years, to establish Risk Engineers Botswana (REB) where he continued his model of recruiting and employing young and multifaceted team of engineers (often fresh from school)-the highlight of which, once again, was REB’s appointment, by the Canadian based Premium Nickel Resources, to undertake a Risk-Based Plant & Machinery Valuation in preparation for the purchase of BCL’s Selibi and Selibi North Shafts.
Beyond traditional risk management, Paul continues to facilitate risk discussions / consultancy work through various board appointments i.e. until recently, Minerals Development Company of Botswana (MDCB) board amongst others.
PGR holds both BA and MSc degrees in Risk Management from Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, UK, which he attained in 1996 and 1997 respectively. Most recently (June 2025), PGR reached, simultaneously, the pinnacle of his dual professions by being awarded the prestigious titles of Certified Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management (CFIRM), UK, as well as Fellow of the Insurance Institute of South Africa (FIISA). Additionally, his leadership acumen was enhanced by participation in the Executive Leadership and Management Development programmes at the Gordon Institute of Business Sciences (GIBS) of South Africa and Cranfield University in the UK in 2002.
